Why It Matters
The age expansion to the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) may have impact to Primary Care and Physician workload with an increase in screening demand.
This is a positive preventative measure and will allow people aged 40-49 to have informed discussions with healthcare professionals about the benefits of breast cancer screening.
What’s Changing
Starting in fall 2024, the OBSP will expand breast cancer screening to people aged 40-49, in addition to the current 50-74 age group. This decision follows comprehensive research and consultations, aligning Ontario’s program with practices in other jurisdictions like Canada, the U.S., Australia, and Sweden.
The OBSP emphasizes personalized decision-making, encouraging individuals to evaluate their own breast cancer risk, potential screening benefits and harms, and personal health priorities.
Next Steps for Providers
· Inform people aged 40-49 about the new OBSP age eligibility.
· Be prepared to have more frequent discussions with these people about breast cancer screening options and decisions.
· Work with local OBSP sites to manage any increases in patient volume and ensure timely access to screening.
