Can you tell us a bit about your role and your area of expertise?
I am the Medical Director of the Stratford Family Health Team Midlife Women’s Health Clinic and the Nurse Practitioner Program Lead for the Huron-Perth Heart Function Clinic. My areas of expertise are heart disease and menopause, and I am a Menopause Society Certified Provider. Of particular relevance, I recently spoke as an expert on heart disease and osteoporosis screening as part of menopause care at the National Menopause Show. I was also a top expert group member for the Centre For Effective Practice Menopause Tool, a government-funded project.
What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare, and what continues to motivate you in your work today?
Decades ago, family and friends I had cared for advised me that I was a natural and should consider nursing. As soon as I started the program, I saw they were right and I have since loved being a nurse. Today, I am motivated by the patients and families who benefit from our work, and the opportunities I’ve been given to improve health outcomes and quality of life at a systems level.
What is the best part of my current role and overall career?
The best part of my current role is helping people feel and function their best in the clinics while also improving care at the systems level with program building, education, and advocacy. The best part of my overall career so far is that we are improving heart disease and midlife women’s health with a very supportive community in Huron-Perth residents, and committed health care teams.
What work have you done with the Huron Perth & Area Ontario Health Team (HPA-OHT)?
With the OHT, I have served as the Huron-Perth’s Heart Function Clinic’s Nurse Practitioner Lead. I am also involved in the development of the Huron-Perth Primary Care Network.
Outside of work, what helps you recharge?
Outside of work, I love spending time biking or hiking or camping in nature, and being around family, friends and my dog Lola.
